Post UFC 145 Analysis and a look ahead!

Let me start out by saying what a GREAT night of fights that was! A lot of future events fell in to place because of last night's battles and UFC 145 kept the frenetic pace going set from UFC on FUEL 2. Here are my (@cagechattererik) thoughts and analysis from last night and news that broke after the fights.

UFC 145 Awards ($65,000 each)
Fight of the Night: Hominick vs Yagin
Submission of the Night: Travis Browne
Knockout of the Night: Ben Rothwell

Jones vs Evans:

There is no one at 205lbs that can beat Jon Jones. I don't mind that Jon let this go to decision. To me it shows that his game is complete and he can go the five rounds. I had a feeling if it wasn't over in two rounds it would go just like that. His striking is on a different level (Anderson Silva Level) and with his reach he is a tough fight for anyone in all of MMA. I will be doing my Pound for Pound rankings this week, here is a preview Jon Jones is #2 behind Anderson Silva.

Fallout from fight

Next up for Jon Jones is Dan Henderson. This is not a rumor, we broke this story weeks ago, that if Hendo didn't take HW Title shot he would fight winner of Jones vs Evans.

Schaub vs Rothwell:

I told you this would lead to a massive knockout! I thought Ben was out on his feet but then he proved me wrong. Great win by the big man and even better speech after.

Fallout from the fight:

Rumors have surfaced that Ben has said if he didn't win he would leave MMA. I am glad to see him staying around. With Mir taking title shot and Roy Nelson now fighting Cain Velasquez for #1 Contender could Rothwell take the open slot to fight Bigfoot Silva?

Rory MacDonald vs Che Mills:

Che didn't get the hype he deserved for this fight, but that was for a reason. He was going up against a SAVAGE! Rory MacDonald IS the next big thing at Welterweight and will be champion SOON. I was very impressed with his dominance where ever this fight went and mount game is perhaps top five in the UFC. Keep and eye on this kid, only 22 and with that skill set (reminds me of someone else on this card) the sky is the limit.

Fallout from fight:

I don't think Rory will push to fight GSP anytime soon and I was impressed by how humble he was after the fight. He knows he needs some work in areas (I didn't see any weakness) and wants to keep moving up the ladder. I do see him fighting a Nick Diaz, John Fitch or the winner of Koscheck vs Hendricks later this year.

Miguel Torres vs Michael McDonald

I had heard all the hype about Michael and really did believe that Miguel had seen everything that he could throw at him. Apparently he didn't see that uppercut! Is this the beginning of the end for the 31 year old Torres? He tweeted after the fight "I will be back stronger #champion" so hopefully not but he has some work to do to keep up with these Banatamweights in the UFC.

Fallout from fight:

McDonald proved to the world that he is for real and if he touches your chin your taking a nap. I can see him taking on Drew Pickett in what could be a Fight of the Year later this year. Pickett is a top 5 fighter in the division and McDonald proved he should be considered in that group too.

Mark Hominick vs Eddie Yagin:

WHAT A FIGHT! At first I thought Hominick didn't have a chance after being knocked down twice and a lesser official would have stopped the fight. Yagin's power is for real and people need to watch out in the first round because he puts everything he has into that right hand. As the fight progressed and Hominick found his range I thought he (Hominick) was going to get the split decision or a draw, I was surprised but not surprised that Yagin won the fight. That first round was brutal.

Fallout from fight:

I can see this fight getting a rematch soon. It was so close and the fans loved it (I will get to them at the end). If that doesn't happen I wouldn't be surprised to see him fight someone like Ross Pearson, Dennis Siver, or even George Roop.

Mark Bocek vs John Alessio:

This fight had me on the edge of my seat in the 3rd round because I thought Bocek would make the mistake of standing with Alessio. This was a classic wrestler vs striker and Alessio's lack of any sort of take down defense cost him this fight. To make any type of noise in this fight game he will need to go back to the drawing board and fix that aspect because his striking is wonderful.

Fallout from fight:

Great win for Bocek and I could now see him taking on his original opponent Matt Wiman when he is healthy. He didn't show me anything really besides great take downs that would make him take a huge jump in the division but a win is a win!

Random Notes:
  1. American fans need to relax and stop this booing crap. Not every fight is a Jason Statham movie. To boo the Jon vs Rashad fight was just embarrassing. That was one of the more cerebral fights I have ever seen and if one of them made a mistake it would have been over. Relax and enjoy the fights. Take a note from Japanese fans.
  2. Who will fight Bigfoot Silva???? I think it could be Travis Browne or Ben Rothwell with the showing they put on tonight and the lack of damage could give Browne the edge. Great fight regardless.
  3. I was glad to see MacDonald side step question about a title fight seeing how GSP is in his camp and we all just witnessed that drama that causes.
  4. Very excited the UFC on Fox is right around the corner on May 5th and UFC on FUEL 3 (@cagechattererik will be reporting live from the Patriot Center) on May 15th. Put in your mouth guard it is going to be a hard hitting MAY!
