UFC 143: DIAZ VS CONDIT, EVENT PREVIEW AND BETTING LINES, PART 1

If you are a Mixed Martial Arts fan, you have to enjoy the fact that practically every weekend there is an MMA event on pay TV or Pay Per View.  It definitely is a good time to be a fan of the fastest growing sport in the world.  This weekends UFC 143 event Diaz vs Condit is no exception.

UFC 143 takes place February 4th, 2012 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Per the peoples champ Chael Sonnen's request, UFC 143 starts live on Facebook around 7pm on the East Coast, 4pm on the West Coast, then at 8pm on the East coast, 5pm on the West Coast fights are broadcast live on the FX cable channel.  The Pay Per View main card starts at 10pm on the East Coast and 7pm on the West coast.

The main event between Stockton, California Bad Boy Nick Diaz vs Carlos "The Natural Born Killer" Condit is for the UFC interim Welterweight title.  This fight was made out of necessity when #3 pound for pound fighter Georges St Pierre sustained an ACL injury to his left knee.  This injury forced the dominant champion out of his planned title fight against Diaz, and put him out of competition for 10 months.

We also received a request from the world famous Rampage Collector, and over the next few days we will preview, give predictions, and betting lines for the entire UFC 143 fight card.  Leave any thoughts and comments below.

Since the betting lines for the under card have yet to be released we will start with the first fight of the main card.  Betting lines are courtesy of betus.com

Clifford Starks

Ed Herman

Ed "Short Fuse" Herman is a veteran of the UFC.  He boasts a professional Mixed Martial Arts record of 19-7.  Six of his wins have come by KO/TKO, 11 have been by submission and 2 by decision.  Clifford Starks who took his first UFC fight on two weeks notice, has a professional MMA record of 8-0.  Of his 8 wins, 3 have come via KO/TKO's, 1 submission and 4 decisions.  Starks is a NCAA Division 1 wrestler from Arizona State University, who trains out of Arizona Combat Sports.  Before his entry into the UFC he fought primarily out of the Rage in the Cage promotion.  "Short Fuse" Herman is a willy vet.  He was a cast member of season three on the Ultimate Fighter reality show.  In his past 4 fights, Herman is 3-1 with his sole loss coming because of an injury.  This bout Herman will dominate from start to finish.  It will start out with a little bit of striking but when Starks sees that Herman is the better striker, he will go to what he knows.  Wrestling.  Herman who trains with Team Quest and has an above average ground game will be able to defend Starks shots and put the newcomer in uncomfortable positions.  Once in the dominant position Herman will use his experience and submit Starks.

WINNER: ED "SHORT FUSE" HERMAN, ARMBAR, 2ND ROUND

UFC WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION GEORGES ST PIERRE (GSP) SPEAKS OUT

Current MMA OCTAGON TAKES #3 (Overall) pound for pound fighter and UFC welterweight champion Georges St Pierre has spoken out on a variety of topics recently.  The dominant UFC champion has also given his thoughts about UFC 143's pivotal main event this weekend.  In the champions words:

CHEERING FOR THE ENEMY

“I respect Carlos Condit, but I want Diaz to win. It will be a weird feeling, sitting at the Mandalay Bay wanting Nick Diaz to win. I want this fight with Diaz so badly, as badly as I wanted the title shot when I got down on my knees. I have never asked (UFC President) Dana White for anything, but I did ask to fight Nick Diaz. I was (crushed) when I had to pull out of this weekend’s fight hurt, but I am determined to get back to the Octagon as soon as possible to fight this guy. He needs to hold up his part and beat Carlos Condit on Saturday to make this fight happen.

ON HIS FEARS CONDIT WILL WIN

“I am very nervous that Carlos Condit will win on Saturday night, and that I won’t be able to fight Nick Diaz this summer. Carlos Condit is a very good fighter, he can strike, he is aggressive and he has submissions. He has been very impressive and is the type of fighter who gets better and better the more confident hegets.

I am not personal friends with him but I know him a little and he’s a great person. I know a lot of people who know him well because we train with the same people, but I have only spoken with him a few times.  He is a true mixed martial artist. I feel bad, it is weird that I want him to lose, but I have never wanted to fight anyone as much as I want to fight Diaz.”

ON DANA WHITE’S COMMENT THAT GSP ‘HATES’ DIAZ

“I don’t truly hate him as a person. I don’t know that he is a bad guy, but I hate what he brings to the sport with the disrespect and the unprofessional things he says and does. It is sort of a professional hatred. He has been nothing but disrespectful and arrogant towards me. During UFC 137 (week) I felt like I had to walk around Las Vegas with my fists ready (to punch Diaz) because every time I came across him he wanted to fight there and then. Every time the elevator opened (in the hotel) I needed to be ready to fight in case he stepped in. I was on edge all week. This guy is crazy.

I am used to hearing (smack) talk from opponents, Matt Serra did it, Dan Hardy did it, and Josh Koscheck did it, but with Diaz he has taken it to another level. He and his coach (Cesar Gracie) have called me a coward and tried to disrespect myaccomplishments.

All that has done though is make me determined to beat him up. He will bring out the best in me, I will be 100% focused, like a bomb-expert defusing a time bomb. When my back is against the wall and I have no choice but to win, when I cannot lose to this person under any cost, that is when I am most dangerous.

Also, as champion, I believe Diaz deserves the fight for the title. Style-wise, he is a very tough match for me and the fans deserve to see the fight they really want to see.”

ON WHETHER THE ‘INTERIM’ CHAMP WILL BE THE REAL CHAMP

“The way I see it, I am not the champion anymore on Saturday night. I have not fought since April, against my will, but I understand the champion must fight. You have to put the belt on the line in order to call yourself champion, the best in the world. Right now I am not the best in the world, I am injured. The winner of this fight on Saturday will be more than just the new No.1 contender, but he won’t be the new champion either. The winner of this fight will have to beat me to become the true world champion and I will have to beat the winner of this fight in order to call myself the best in the world again.

I like the format where the winner of this fight will have to fight me and I have to fight the winner to truly become the UFC champion. That is what the UFC is about, that is competition. This is fair to all of us, we have to beat each other to be the undisputed champion.”

ON DIAZ’S DOMINATING WIN OVER BJ PENN

“He was very impressive. Nick Diaz’s boxing is very strong; he could be the best boxer in the UFC. I don’t want to be seen to be advising any other fighter how to win a fight, but if Diaz does what he does best then he should win this fight on Saturday. It is a very close fight though.”

ON HIS RIGHT KNEE INJURY AND REHAB

“I am ahead of schedule. I can already train and even kick but I am remaining calm and not rushing. I won’t train properly until July, it is a matter of discipline not to force my knee to go harder than it can heal. No athlete wants to sit on thesidelines, especially when you are the champion and you must watch two others fight for the interim championship belt. I will watch on Saturday and go home very motivated to rehab on Monday morning but I must be disciplined and I must continue to rehab at the pace I am doing.”

UFC ON FOX 2 PREVIEW AND BETTING LINES: PART 3

In our third and final installment of our UFC on FOX 2 preview, we are going to review the main event of the evening.  "Suga" Rashad Evans vs Phil "Mr Wonderful "Davis is not only going to have the most people watching live and on national TV, it is an important fight for the UFC, FOX and the UFC's Light Heavyweight division title picture.  If Rashad Evans wins and is un-injured he is guaranteed the next UFC Light Heavyweight title shot against former friend, confidant, and training partner Jonny "Bones" Jones.   That fight most likely will take place at UFC 145 in Atlanta, Georgia, April 21, 2012.  UFC president Dana White has also stated that if Phil Davis has an unbelievable performance and wins he could jump to the front of the pack and get the title shot.

Phil Davis           +155
Rashad Evans    -190

Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion"Suga" Rashad Evans has a professional Mixed Martial Arts record of 16-1-1.  His only loss was a decisive one to Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida when he made his first and only UFC Light Heavyweight title defense at UFC 98.  Evans has a very good wrestling base, but to compliment that wrestling base he has lighting fast hands.  This will keep opponents guessing.  He has beaten a whose who in Mixed Martial Arts.  Evans was the man who dramatically KO'd Chuck Liddell at UFC 88 which was the begining of the end for the once dominant Liddell.  He has also beaten guys with last names like Griffin, Silva, Jackson and Ortiz.

Phil "Mr Wonderful" Davis is still relatively new to MMA but he has a perfect professional record of 9-0.  Davis uses dominant wrestling skills and above average Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills to overwhelm his opponents to get the win.  Davis holds notable wins over the likes of Brian Stann, Alexander Gustafsson, and Antônio Rogério"Lil Nog" Nogueira.

The bout between Evans and Davis is going to go one of two ways.  Davis and Evans will respect each others wrestling and it will be a stand up fight or it will be an instant classic grappling match.  If Davis dares to stand and trade with "Suga" he will most likely be seeing stars before or during the second round.  Evans hands are just too good and too fast.  If Davis does have a weakness it is definately in the striking department.  As evidence, refer to his Lil Nog fight.  Any shot Davis has of winning this fight it will most likely come on the ground.  Evans has not shown too much Jiu Jitsu in his UFC appearances.  Preferring to strike and wrestle.  I would not rule out in a scramble Evans getting caught in one of Phil Davis's crazy submissions he possesses.  Evans (hopefully) will be prepared for this.  Will a change from Jacksons's MMA be a factor here?  As previously mentioned Davis's striking is not too much cause for concern.  I think the outcome is pretty clear though.

WINNER: "SUGA" RASHAD EVANS, TKO, 2ND ROUND.  I also would not be surprised by post fight drama with current UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones

UFC ON FOX 2 PRESS CONFERENCE VIDEO

This is an instant classic.  UFC on FOX 2 Pre-Fight Press Conference.  Fast forward to 11:50 mark to start..

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF UFC ON FOX 2

Three days away from the sold out UFC on FOX tripleheader at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, the six main card fighters had somethings to say.  Check them out

Rashad Evans, UFC light heavyweight

“Davis is intimidated. I’ve seen him around and he’s not looking too confident. He’s not ready for this level, and he knows it. He’s coming to put up a good show, go back down a level, and come back again in a year or two. He’s not coming to take it to me, but I am gonna’ take it to him. After I had my year off (with injury) I came back with the attitude of never, ever leaving it up to the judges and just throwing hands all the time. That’s the way my career is going to go, and that’s how I am going to.

Phil is just a nice guy. He’s not a fighter. He’s an athlete, a great athlete, but not a fighter. He has no killer instinct for this and he’s got no experience at this level. He’s never fought at heavyweight like I had to (in TUF 2) to get into the UFC. He didn’t get punched by Chuck Liddell and Rampage Jackson like I did. He’s not had to dig deep at all.

He’s in deep water, and I’m the shark.”

Phil Davis, UFC light heavyweight

“He’s delusional. If he thinks he’s going to out-wrestle or intimidate me, he’s in for a shock on Saturday night. I’ve been working hard for this; I can’t wait to get back into the Octagon after a layoff. He’s not as good as he thinks he is, and I am better than he thinks I am. He thinks he’s a better wrestler than me, crazy. I would beat him 100 times out of 100. He was something like .500 in won/losses in wrestling. I was a champion; he just competed.

Yes, I have only nine pro MMA fights but the inexperience thing isn’t an issue. I am less experienced than every single guy I’ve faced, and I am unbeaten. I am experienced at winning, and that’s what really matters, and I’m going to experience winning again on FOX.”

Chael Sonnen, UFC middleweight

“I hate terms like ‘hype’ and ‘trash-talk’ because I don’t do that. I never say anything I don’t mean and I’m not going to insult a guy I have no problem with. But, that said, Bisping is a jerk and I’m going to finish him faster than he can devour a Bovril and meatpie. I am the best fighter in the world. He thinks he can beat me, I think I can beat him and we are going to see who is right in the only debating forum that matters – the UFC Octagon.

I came to Chicago to do Michael Bisping a lot of physical harm. I don’t come here to ‘talk trash’ because that’s not something I do.

When this fight was announced, over 2 million extra tickets were demanded by the fans. This is the real main event, the biggest fight of all time.”

Michael Bisping, UFC middleweight

“I know some fans are disappointed that there hasn’t been eight weeks of zingers between us and, to be honest, I think we would have got into it if this fight had been made two months ago. But right now, both of us had to focus on getting ready for a new opponent – and in his case a more dangerous opponent in me – on a week’s notice. I never talk trash unless someone has disrespected me and, to be honest, Chael has been very complimentary of me.

Chael and I have thrown a few little jokes here and there but that’s because we’ve both got a sense of humor. And he’ll need that sense of humor after he goes to the hospital on Saturday night just like seven of my last eight opponents have. I am under no illusions – I am getting kicked, punched, elbowed and taken down by Chael but he’s getting punched, kicked, kneed, elbowed and knocked out in return. It will be a nasty, nasty war, but I’m beating him up and winning this fight. I am sure I will be taken down, but he’s going to have to worry about being submitted each time he does that. He won’t be able to hold me down and I know I can pick him apart standing.

“It is a great fight, I am sure we are both going to look like car-crash victims on Sunday AM. Never mind the trashtalk, we can both do that in our sleep, just tune in on FOX and watch the fight of the year. I may have only been told about this fight last Tuesday, but I have trained my arse off since I was eight years old. I am going to make the oddsmakers look like fools; I am winning this fight.”

Demian Maia, UFC middleweight

“I was disappointed to hear my fight with Bisping was off, but am happy to still be on the card on FOX. I’m ready to turn a negative into a positive, to control the part I can control, which is winning. A win over Bisping would have put me back in the world title picture, but Weidman is a dangerous young fighter and he knows a win over me put him in a great position.

Bisping actually apologized to me for taking the Sonnen fight, but I completely understand. I appreciated him saying that, but this is what we do and the sport we are in. Now I can’t think about Bisping. I have to think about Chris Weidman. I don’t know if it is possible for Weidman to be 100% fit after taking the fight at such short notice. I’m not sure, but I have to go in thinking with the mindset that he is 100%.

He is very dangerous, and I guess that I would rather fight him now than after he gets even better and more experienced. For sure, he will be very motivated. I am not going to lose at this stage though; I have worked too hard and expect a submission after a tough fight.”

Chris Weidman, UFC middleweight

“Taking the fight at a week’s notice wasn’t all that had a decision. I have an opportunity to gain a lot of recognition and get myself up to where I want to be. I was just about to eat a load of waffles when I got the call… I threw those waffles away. There was no chance I was going to pass this up, I want to get into the top five and here’s my chance. You only live once. I didn’t want to sit at home and watch some other guy fight on FOX in an opportunity I already had passed up.

I'm not worried about stepping up at all. I have a lot of respect for Demian’s jiu-jitsu, but if we go to the ground, I'm confident and excited to prove I can hang with my own BJJ. He's going to have a lot to worry about, too, in this fight. I'm not the guy who's going to be starstruck just because of the stage or the fact I am stepping up to this level. I believe in myself and I think I can go in there and submit him or stop him.”

UFC on FOX emanates live from the United Center, Chicago at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Saturday night. Six undercard bouts will be broadcast live on FUEL TV from 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT.

UFC ON FOX 2 PREVIEW AND BETTING LINES: PART 2

In our continuing coverage of UFC on FOX 2 we are going to preview the highly anticipated fight between Chael Sonnen vs Michael "The Count" Bisping.

According to Chael Sonnen yesterday, when he was scheduled to fight Mark Munoz, the overall event had sold only about 9800 tickets.  When Munoz had to withdraw from their fight due to injury, Bisping was announced as his opponent, and ticket sales soared.  It was announced earlier this week the UFC on Fox 2 event is now officially sold out.  The sellout can be directly associated with this fight being made.  UFC president Dana White has stated that a shot at UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva's title awaits the winner of this fight, regardless of Sonnen's claims that the champion will not fight him.

Chael Sonnen     -500
Michael Bisping  +350

Chael Sonnen has a professional Mixed Martial Arts record of 26-11-1.  Sonnen's twenty six wins have come from 7 KO/TKOs, 4 submissions and 15 unanimous decisions.  Sonnen is coming off a very dominant, and impressive performance over the very tough Brian Stann at UFC 136.  He beat Stann by arm triangle choke in the second round.  Sonnen also was the first man to thoroughly dominate pound for pound best and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva inside the octagon.  Sonnen lost that bout by submission, on a hail mary triangle choke, Silva threw up in the tail end of the 5th and final round at UFC 117.  Sonnen however opened eyes after that performance.  Arguably Sonnen won some rounds in that fight against Silva 10-8.

Michael Bisping who is the Ultimate Fighter season 3 winner boasts a professional Mixed Martial Arts record of 22-3.  Bisping's twenty-two wins have come from 14 KO/TKOs, 4 submissions and 4 decisions.  Bisping is currently riding a four fight win streak with wins over Jason Miller, Jorge Rivera, Yoshihiro Akiyama and Dan Miller over that stretch.  His last two bouts have ended in TKO victories.

The Bisping/Sonnen match up I feel is pretty easy to call as the betting line suggests.  Sonnen who is probably one of the best wrestlers in Mixed Martial Arts is a hard match up for anyone.  His wrestling and ground and pound is reminiscent to an early Mark Coleman.  If Sonnen employs this game plan he will be victorious.  Bisping's only chance to win is if he catches Sonnen coming in at the start of any round or on a referee stand up.  Bisping's striking can not be overlooked though.

WINNER: CHAEL SONNEN, UNANIMOUS DECISION

We leave you with this funny Chael Sonnen picture

A LOOK AT ROCHESTER, NEW YORK'S LOCAL MUSIC SCENE: AN INTERVIEW WITH CRY TO THE BLIND LEAD SINGER/FRONTMAN JON LAMANNA

When I was 22 years old and working at Best Buy in Henrietta, NY, I had a crew of boys that I always hung out with on the weekends.  They were Michael, Josh, Jacob, Jared, Adam, Jeremy, Jed, Cathy, Dave, Blackbeard, and a few others.  It could of been a Friday night or Saturday night but if there was a local alternative or heavy metal band playing in Rochester we were usually there.  We had a lot of mutual friends in local bands.  At times it paid off having these friends.  I remember times when my boys and I got out of work late, and we had to make calls to get into sold out shows for local bands.  The popular bands we saw at the time were Omniblank, Rip-Kor, 40oz Failure, Loopus, Stemm and Wiremouth.  They consistently had shows at a few staple venues in Rochester, NY.  Venues like the Penny Arcade, Tremors, Milestones and Water Street Music Hall.

For five years this is what we did.  The alternative/heavy metal music scene in Rochester, NY was awesome.  It was the thing to do.  I can honestly say it was some of the best times I ever had.  So many good times.  However, it slowly went away.  Bands moved on, people just chose different paths in life.  However those times will never be forgotten.  Recently there has been some movement in the alternative/heavy metal scene thanks to a few things.  DeadRoc Productions a local music promotions company, who has deep roots to the heavy metal scene in Rochester is trying to resurrect it.  H8 Machine who was on hiatus for many years is back going full throttle.  They are playing a ton of shows and writing new material, which they have not done in many years.  Armed with Valor is a Central New York band that has been playing a lot of gigs recently in Rochester, is gaining more and more fans after each performance.  Lastly is the emergence of probably one of the best bands to come out of Rochester, NY in a long time: Cry to the Blind.  They have opened for many national recording artists such as Taproot, Flyleaf and also winning the opening spot on the Darien Lake stop of the Uproar Tour this past summer.

We here at MMA OCTAGON TAKES had the privilege of interviewing front man/lead singer of Cry to the Blind (CTTB), Jon Lamanna about his bands new cd, upcoming cd release party, what is next for Cry to the Blind and lastly Mixed Martial Arts.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Tell me a little about yourself and your band mates

Jon Lamanna: We LOVE music. It's everything we are and who we wanna be. We're all big sports fans.  We all get together to watch (the) UFC when we can. I'm the biggest fan of MMA in the group, I can't stand when I miss a fight. I actually spar with a friend of mine that's an amateur MMA fighter.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: How did you guys come together and form Cry to the Blind?

Jon Lamanna: Our previous band was growing tiresome, so we decided to change our sound and go with a more positive outlook, basically try to inspire people. We kept almost all the same people that were a part of the previous band, just tweaked the sound and I became the lead vocalist, and CTTB was formed.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: How long you been together?

Jon Lamanna: 6 years

MMA OCTAGON TAKES : What can people expect from a CTTB live show?

Jon Lamanna: Non-stop energy and heartfelt honesty. We pour our hearts out up there every night.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Have you played in other bands before CTTB?

Jon Lamanna: Several....None really of note, none that have had nearly as much success as CTTB at least.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: You have a new CD coming out this Friday.  Describe the process of making it, and coming up with the songs.

Jon Lamanna: We actually recorded the cd in our guitarist Matt's home studio. It was a crazy process, because Matt is new to the band and we actually wrote 80% of the songs while jammin in the studio. Now we have to learn how to play them live! lol

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: What is the name of the cd?

Jon Lamanna: From Now On

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: How did you guys come up with the name for the album?

Jon Lamanna: We are not taking any shortcuts from now on.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: What is your favorite song on the new album?

Jon Lamanna: "The Hunger"......it's a GREAT song to work out to, it means a lot to me.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Why does that song mean a lot too you?

Jon Lamanna: The Hunger is the feeling inside we all have to succeed.....The drive....It wont go away when its real

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Who are your musical influences and where do you get your inspiration for the songs you write?

Jon Lamanna: My inspiration comes from wanting to show people that life doesn't have to be as horrible as it seems to some people. I try to be a voice of change and growth and strength for people, that's what I love about the music, it's almost like I'm willing myself to succeed.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: You have a big show this Friday night to celebrate From Now On's release.  Tell me about that and are there any other bands on the bill.

Jon Lamanna: There are 6 other bands, all of which we hand picked to support us. They are Endyga, Endever, H8 Machine, The Untold Lies, Starlight Cities, and 1000 Shades of Cold.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: This show is probably the biggest local rock show, by local bands in the last 10 years.  Those days clubs like Tremors and the Penny Arcade were staple venues  in the local music scene.  They had bands like Omniblank, Loopus, Stemm, Rip Kor, Wiremouth, 40 oz failure regularly on their stages.  How important is this show to the local Rochester music scene?

Jon Lamanna: I think it will show people that Rochester is still a HUGE hotbed for great local bands, and that we have the support of our fans, which means everything when we push this thing into the national spotlight.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Is there anyone on Friday night your looking forward to seeing play?

Jon Lamanna: All of them, honestly....but H8 Machine probably the most due to the nostalgia factor. Jed was and still is a GREAT front man, so intense up there.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: After this show Friday night what is next for CTTB?

Jon Lamanna: We are getting ready to go national on many different fronts, and we are actually planning another release due out in spring. It's a secret what it is but it's something nobody really does anymore.....

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Are any members of CTTB fans of Mixed Martial Arts?

Jon Lamanna: Oh yes. We all are to an extent. I read MMA websites daily so I'd say I'm probably the most hardcore.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: You check out HTTP://WWW.MMAOCTAGONTAKES.COM daily right?

Jon Lamanna: Of course :)

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: If you had your choice of Mixed Martial Artists, who would you want too have walk out to a CTTB song.  Why?  What song would it be?

Jon Lamanna: Clay Guida. Dude's all heart, I love that dude. Or Jon Jones because he's a spiritual dude and he's local, I think that would be a great fit.  Tear Us Apart would be a great fit for either Guida or Jones.

MMA OCTAGON TAKES: Is there anybody you would like to thank or have any sponsors you would like to thank?

Jon Lamanna: I/we would like to thank "Skin Deep Tattoo, Rock n Roll Gangstar Clothing, and our manager Joe. We are useless without him."

We here at MMA OCTAGON TAKES would like to thank Jon Lamanna for his valuable time to sit down and do the interview with us.  Not only is Jon part of one of the best bands in Rochester, NY, he is a father and devoted husband.  We would also like to thank the entire Cry to the Blind family especially Jon, Cory Maclachlan, Jesse Maty, Jay Telarico, and Matt Spaker.  Thank you for providing us with awesome music to spar and workout too.  If you are in Rochester, NY or in the surrounding areas this Friday night (01.27.11), the place to be is Water Street Music Hall located at 204 N Water St, Rochester, NY 14604.  The show starts at 6pm and tickets are dirt cheap for 7 bands.  $10 presale and $12 at the door.  For more information, news, music and tour dates visit CTTB at their website http://crytotheblind.com/home.html .  Also like their facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cry-to-the-Blind/108920287952 .

UFC ON FOX 2 PREVIEW AND BETTING LINES: PART 1

This Saturday night (01.28.12) live from the United Center, in Chicago, Illinois the UFC on Fox 2 takes place.  A highly anticipated event for the UFC and Mixed Martial Arts as a whole.  Not only is it on national TV (FOX), it is the first full event (thank you to Elisabeth Nuesser of Fight Chix Apparel for the clarification) of the UFC's ground breaking 7 year deal with Fox.  The UFC tested the waters back in November when they put on teaser event on Fox.  That event featured the UFC's heavyweight title being on the line between Cain Velasquez (champion) vs Junior Dos Santos (challenger).  Dos Santos won the bout and the heavyweight title in just 64 seconds.  Viewership expectations for the event will be closely monitored.  With not much going on in sports this Saturday night, a lot of people will be tuning in.  This event, which has been aggressively promoted on Fox during NFL games could and should take the UFC to the next level.  It will create awareness of the fastest growing sport in the world, and also introduce the sport to millions of people.  It also will turn some casual fans in to die hards too.  And just maybe open some eyes in New York State to finally get it legalized.

Last week the UFC on FOX 2 card dramatically changed when Mark Munoz had to withdraw from his #1 Middleweight contenders bout with Chael Sonnen due to injury.  The changes that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva and UFC President Dana White pulled off were met with a lot of positive reaction.  Fans and critics alike are saying the card is better now.

The full UFC on FOX 2: Evans vs. Davis card with where you can see the action is below:
Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans
Michael Bisping vs. Chael Sonnen
Demian Maia vs. Chris Weidman

PRELIMINARY CARD *FUEL TV*

Johnny Bedford vs. Mitch Gagnon
Evan Dunham vs. Nik Lentz
Michael Johnson vs. Shane Roller
Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow
George Roop vs. Cub Swanson
Charles Oliveira vs. Eric Wisely
Joey Beltran vs. Lavar Johnson
Chris Camozzi vs. Dustin Jacoby

Over the course of the next three days we are going to review, give predictions and betting lines to the 3 main card fights that will air live on Fox Saturday night.

Demian Maia

Chris Weidman

Demian Maia who was originally scheduled to fight British middleweight contender Michael "The Count" Bisping was without an opponent when Bisping got pulled from the bout to replace Mark Munoz against Chael Sonnen.  It did not take long for the UFC to find a replacement to fight Maia.  They found probably the fastest rising, hungry young lion and a person drawing comparisons to another hungry young lion Jon Jones in Chris "The All American" Weidman.  Remember the name Weidman.

Maia who is a former UFC Middleweight title challenger has a professional Mixed Martial Arts record of 15-3.  Maia has had 2 KO/TKO wins, 8 submission and 5 decision wins.  Maia is one of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitors in the UFC.  His list of BJJ accolades and grappling accolades is very impressive.  Maia is like a snake hunting a mouse when he is on the ground.  I would find it hard to find anyone better than him in MMA there.  As impressive as Maia is on the ground his striking is something that needs a lot of work.  Training out of The Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas, Nevada Maia has tried to make improvements there.  He has been working with "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva and Kit Cope to improve his striking and Muay Thai skills.  In his last few fights the hard work has shown.  Maia has had great success against lower ranked opponents than him in the UFC.  However, guys ranked higher than him have had better success against him.  The one exception is Maia's victory over UFC Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen at UFC 95.

Chris "The All American" Weidman is very well known in the die hard MMA fan circles.  We are going to take our column we wrote in our 5 Fighters to Watch in late 2011 and 2012 to show Weidman's rise.  Follow our link here to read the entire piece 5 Mixed Martial Arts Fighters to watch in late 2011 and 2012

Chris "The All American" Weidman from Baldwin, NY and fighting out of Mineola, NY is a UFC middleweight fighter(185lbs), 6'2 inches tall and 27 years old.  He has a professional MMA record of 6-0.  Of his 6 wins 2 each have come from ko/tko, submission and decision respectively.

Training with the Serra-Longo Fight team, Weidman brings in an impressive All American NCAA division one wrestling background that he achieved at Hofstra University.  With former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra as his brazilian jiu jitsu(BJJ) and Ray Longo as his striking coach Weidman has the coaches to make him a force in the UFC's middleweight division.

**An interesting off note about Weidman, is that with only 1 year of formal BJJ training, he qualified for the 2009 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship where he lost to high ranked BJJ practitioner Andre Galvao in a very close match**

Weidman started his pro mma career on the regional New Jersey circuit with the Ring of Combat(ROC) organization.  Three of four bouts he had with ROC were all finishes(2 by tko and 1 one by submission).  Over this period he also won the ROC middleweight title.

On March 3, 2011, Weidman took on battle tested and veteran UFC fighter Alessio Sakara at UFC Live: Sanchez vs Kampmann.  Weidman replaced an injured Rafael Natal and took this fight on two weeks notice.  Weidman a underdog in this fight, pulled off a huge upset by scoring a unanimous decision victory over the battle tested Sakara.  Weidman then had his next bout at UFC 131 stepping up again to replace injured Ultimate Fighter season 11 winner Court Mcgee against Jesse Bongfeldt.  Weidman looked unbelievable in this fight and locked in a standing guillotine choke at the very end of round 1 to not only win but also win the submission of the night bonus.

Weidman has the coaching, the wrestling base(which with every passing event is more and more a requirement), size, skill and strength to be the future of the UFC's 185 lb division.  In almost every MMA publication including this one here at MMA OCTAGON TAKES Weidman is ranked #1 or close to #1 as the cant miss and #1 rated prospect in all of mixed martial arts.

With a successful win against  "Filthy" Tom Lawlor at UFC 139 Weidman was waiting for his next bout agreement.  Well it did not take long for that to come.  He got the call and it is against the well regarded Maia, and probably on the UFC's most important fight card in its relatively young history.

This match-up is an intriguing one.  Weidman has proven in his first 3 UFC bouts he is a well rounded Mixed Martial Artist.  Definately a company man, Weidman is super confident in his abilities.  In his short UFC career, Weidman has agreed to take on two dangerous opponents on less than two weeks notice.  (Sakara and now Maia) Weidman who has been training with the likes of Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie and New Zealand BJJ phenom John Danaher regularly is well prepared for Maia's ground attack.  Recently Weidman posted a video on Youtube that highlighted a day in his life.  He was at Renzo Gracies gym in New York training with Danaher.  Weidman went on camera and stated Danaher is a game changer and is revolutionizing the sport.  The only way I see Weidman lose is if he fails at the edges of his experiences.  I see this fight early on as a grappling chess match.  Then the fight will change.  Weidman will get comfortable, use his striking skills with his superior wrestling to control the fight where ever it goes.  Weidman wins and becomes an instant and over night star.  We are witnessing the next Jon Jones in the middleweight division and his name is Chris "The All American" Weidman.

WINNER: CHRIS "THE ALL AMERICAN" WEIDMAN, UNANIMOUS DECISION

REPORT: JON JONES TO HEADLINE UFC 145, AND POTENTIALLY LAST FIGHT AT LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT

On a weekend where everyone's attention is on the National Football Leagues Championship games for the AFC and NFC divisions, there is late breaking UFC news.

From @FrontRowBrian (twitter, and who has MMA industry inside sources)it is being said that the dominant Light Heavyweight Champion and #2 pound for pound fighter in the world Jonny "Bones" Jones will headline UFC 145 in Atlanta, Georgia, April 21, 2012.  Jones will defend his title at the event regardless who wins this upcoming weekends(01.28.12) UFC on FOX 2 main event.  The champions potential opponents could be Dan "Hendo" Henderson, Phil "Mr Wonderful" Davis or former training partner, friend and confidant "Suga" Rashad Evans.

Another interesting note the source said IF Jon Jones wins at UFC 145 its likely that its his last fight in the UFC's 205lb light heavyweight division.  A long talked about move to heavyweight is likely on the horizion.

We here at MMA OCTAGON TAKES would love to see the man dubbed Bones try to make a run at the UFC's heavyweight title while still the sitting UFC Light Heavyweight champion.  Jones has the talent to be the sports first fighter to be a champion in two different divisions at the same time.  He would do something Brandon Vera talked bout but could not pull off.

Melvin Guillard, UFC lightweight contender

“I am looking at making a statement on FX against another top guy in the division. He’s one of the best fighters in the world at this weight and it is a great main event.

“What happened (to me) last time (first round loss against Joe Lauzon) was a mistake. I rushed in so hard and fast I was stunned with a jab and from there I lost the fight. It was kinda dumb, but I am young enough to learn as long as realize the mistake. I made the mistake, it didn’t just happen, I know that but I also know I’m still one of the best fighters in the division.

“But I am ready for this fight with Miller. He’s a top guy, maybe the No 3 or No 4 in the division, and if I perform like I can do, I think it will be hard for people to say that I didn’t deserve a UFC title shot. I won’t be reckless, but you will see what I can do on FX Friday night. You will see the Young Assassin!”

Jim Miller, UFC lightweight contender

“I’m only 28, but the thing about me is I always think I need to make things happen right now. I’ve only lost one fight in eight, but I made mistakes in that loss to Ben Henderson and I made mistakes in the wins before that, and I am in a hurry to correct those, win some fights, and get a title shot. Some people say I am more consistent than Melvin in the Octagon, but Melvin is very dangerous on the feet and with someone like that, one mistake is all it takes. I will watch out for his power, but I will be taking this fight to him right from get-go.

“He doesn’t like fighting when you crowd him, but he’s a very quick puncher and will always be very dangerous on the counter. He’s a top lightweight with a lot of weapons, but I think I can beat him go on to challenge for the belt in 2012. On Saturday morning, he will know he’s been in a fight on Friday night. He won’t feel too good; that’s what I want to do in my fights, let them know right away they are in a fight.”

Duane Ludwig,  UFC welterweight contender

“This is going to be a good, old-fashioned street fight right out of the 1930s, when they used to fight for food in the mean streets of New York. I’m trying to say it will be a war, without saying that because everyone says that. But this is going to be a wild fight on Friday night.

“I’m excited to be fighting now as the official fastest KO (scorer) in UFC history. It was a long-time coming - six years – since I stopped Jonathan Goulet in six seconds in Las Vegas. The Nevada timekeeper wrote it down as 11second and for years I’ve had to hear other fighters get credit for being fastest KO when everyone knew I really held the record. Anyone in any job can make a mistake, but when people won’t admit to a mistake for years and years when it is right there in front of them, well, it kind of upset me and it was a campaign of mine to get the record set straight.

“I was very happy when (UFC President) Dana White tweeted on Christmas Eve that, as far as the UFC was concerned, I held the record for fastest KO ever in the Octagon. The Commissions may not keep a record book, but the UFC does and that’s what’s important, that the UFC and the UFC fans recognize what happened.”

Josh Neer, UFC welterweight contender

“Right now, I am in the middle of the pack and I want to get ahead. The only way to do that is to win fight, to win big and win exciting and that’s what I came here to do. I’m ready for a war. I want to climb that ladder and get right into the thick of the most talented division in the UFC. The only way to stand out in this division is to be impressive and where better to impress than on cable TV…”

Pat Barry, UFC heavyweight contender

“He’s 6ft 6inches, and I am about 5ft 10inches, but everyone is taller than me so this isn’t any real big deal to me. I am coming off two losses but losses in great fights. I am here to win – but I won’t fight any other way than bomb, bomb, bombs away! Whether I am 0-2 in my last two or if I was 40-0, I would fight the same. I punch and kick full power with every shot until the other guy falls or I fall. It’s what I do, it is what I am.”

Christian Morecraft, UFC heavyweight contender

“Being on FX is great for me at this stage of my career. There will be a lot of people watching this and I am on the main card, which means more attention on this fight. That brings added pressure for some people, but for me that’s added excitement and added fun. Pat Barry is a good striker who goes looking for you, but then so am I. This will be a great fight for however long it lasts.”
